Auckland Waterfront

New Zealand's largest urban revitalisation project.

In 2011, Auckland Water front Development Agency (a council controlled organisation) , responsible for around 45 hectares of prime waterfront property at the heart of Auckland city, opened significant new public spaces, restaurants, a tram loop and a new bridge opening up Auckland waterfront at a cost of over NZ $2 Billion . The Wynyard development is a progressive "Clever" mixed-use space, which embraces the industry of the area alongside public space, residential areas and hospitality. Focused around the fish market and the working wharfs, the Wynyard Quarter provides an authentic destination, which speaks to the broader communities of Auckland. This development is transforming the way Aucklanders use and view their city. Chris Morley-Hall of Koko was approached to be the Placemaker  for the project – developing the "flavour" of the area, the strategy to deliver it and concepts to activate public and private spaces during the course of development. There have been many success stories for Koko: from initiating discussion with the waterfront's neighbours and creating a connected waterfront, the expansion of the Auckland fish market and establishment of the viaduct flower market to an award-winning integrated play space and street sports area. Koko helped establish a range of initiatives for Silo Park including cinema, exhibitions, performances and the award winning markets. Koko was also responsible for initiating discussion and structure around the iconic Silo 6 structure which has become a beacon for fresh ideas. Key for Koko was ensuring events of all sizes could utilise the various public spaces; highlighted early on with a wide range of activities during Rugby World Cup 2011.
