Identity

In an age of global multiculturalism and an ever-increasing search for a sense of belonging, IDENTITY brings  together a site specific cultural exposition which presents the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the rich history and contemporary vibrancy of the Oceanic’s relationship to Europe. IDENTITY recognises both the coloniser and colonised in a post-colonial society to provoke thought and discussion about our past, present and future through the lens of different ethnicities.

IDENTITY creates a vibrant, accessible, educational deep-rooted public spectacle through its live projection work. Alongside the public spectacle, IDENTITY builds cultural relationships between the host city and the visiting Oceanic Island iwi, village or tribe, a true celebration of culture through workshops, forums, exhibitions and performances of both contemporary and traditional culture. The partnership with the Oceanic community is crucial to this process. Curated by a leading indigenous / first nation artist they will oversee the creative  direction of the project.

At its heart, this is a project about strengthening the relationships between people through cultural understanding. The public spectacle encourages a wider public engagement for those who are likely to have had minimal experience of the vibrant cultural traditions presented, yet does so on those cultures' terms.
